Anterior Disc Displacement and the Superior Head of Lateral Pterygoid Muscle: A Case-Control Study International Journal of Morphology
Pompei Filho,Horácio; Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela; Guimarães,Antonio Sergio.
The objective of this study was to assess the association between an increase in the proportion of the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (SHLP) inserted into the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc and the presence of anterior disc displacement diagnosed by using MRI. We analyzed 75 images of patients with anterior displacement and 75 controls with normal relationship between the mandibular head and the articular tubercle also diagnosed by MRI. Levels of insertion were measured. Descriptive and analytic statistics were calculated. Analyses of differences were made by Fischer's exact test and also were calculated clinical significance (OR, CI = 95%). The average insertion of SHLP was 71.14% (SD 14.13) in controls and 67.80% (SD.16.23) in cases...

Evaluation of the Prevalence of Bifid Mandibular Condyle Detected on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images in a Turkish Population International Journal of Morphology
Gunduz,Kaan; Buyuk,Cansu; Egrioglu,Erol.
The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of the BMC phenomenon in a Turkish patient population. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 2634 consecutive patients were retrospectively reviewed. The Chi-squared test was used to determine potential differences in the distribution of BMCs when stratified by sex and side. Among the 2634 patients, 42 (1.7%) patients were found to have BMC. Of these 42 patients, 22 were female (0.8%) and 20 were male (0.7%) with age ranging from 29 to 68 years (mean age 47.47). Among the 42 patients, 39 (92.8%) of the BMCs were unilateral and three (7.1%) were bilateral. Approximately 24 cases (53.3%) were on the right side, and 21 cases (46.6%) were on the left side. All of the BMCs showed a mediolateral...

Frequency of Occurence of the Discomalleolar Ligament in the Adult Man International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Deana,Naira Figueiredo.
The discomaleollar ligament is not described in the anatomy textbooks but was demonstrated by Pinto (1962) and others. It is a ligamentous structure connecting the malleus in the tympanic cavity and the articular disc and the capsule of the temporomandibular joint. This anatomical relationship between the middle ear and temporomandibular joint is supposed to be one of the explanations for the otological symptons associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of occurence of the discomaleollar ligament. Twenty hemi-heads of adults human were carefully dissected from a superior approach through the middle cranial fossa. The bone of the middle cranial fossa over the temporomandibular joint region and...

Insertion of the Superior Head of the Lateral Pterigoid Muscle in the Human Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Altruda Filho,Luiz; Alves,Nilton.
The lateral pterygoid muscle, more specifically its superior head, as we know, is closely related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Particularly in children, in contrast with what was observed in adults, these joints have been rarely studied, by the anatomic functional aspect, little knowing about its functions in the embryonic and fetal periods. We used, in this work, 12 fetuses ranging in age from 16 to 39 weeks of intrauterine life, where we observed that the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle is inserted in the disc and in the articular capsule, in all age groups studied, and also, that the fibers and the thickness of the articular disc is, as well as the articular capsule suffer modifications in accordance with the period of development

Mandibular Fossa Depth Variations: Relation to Age and Dental State International Journal of Morphology
Ballesteros Acuña,Luis Ernesto; Ramirez Aristeguieta,Luis Miguel; Muñoz Mantilla,Gerardo.
A mandibular fossa depth correlation with dental condition and age in humans. 120 fresh male mandibular fossas were measured from the deepest area of the fossa to a horizontal reference line. The samples were classified according to age and dental state (dentate, partially dentate and totally edentulous) and a multivariate analysis was employed. Subjects average age was 41.1 (20-85). There were more partially dentate individuals (59.16%) than dentate (30%) or edentulous ones (10.83%). Average fossa depth was 6.9 mm (6.6-7.1 mm 95%CI) which significantly decreased with increased age and dental health deterioration (p<0.01). A period of five years edentulism increased the likelihood of mandibular fossa flattening (<6.9 mm) by 20.6% and 7.2% in dentate...

Prevalence of the Third Head of the Lateral Pterygoid Muscle: A Magnetic Resonance Image Study International Journal of Morphology
Pompei Filho,Horácio; Guimarães,Antonio Sergio; Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio.
The lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) is important in the physiology and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which has described the presence of a third head in the lateral pterygoid muscle (THLPM). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of THLPM and its relationship with the TMJ disc through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It was evaluated 178 MRI of the TMJ of healthy individuals, in images that presented THLPM, and these were defined and measured at the surface inserted into the disc. The prevalence of THLPM was 20.22% (n = 36). Insertion of THLPM was made entirely on the TMJ disc, the average area of insertion was 4.14mm (SD 1.35) in women and 4.67 (SD 2.68) in men, but these differences were not significant. We concluded...

Prevalence of Vertical Condilar Asymmetry of the Temporomandibular Joint in Patients with Signs and Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders International Journal of Morphology
Iturriaga,Verónica; Navarro,Pablo; Cantin,Mario; Fuentes,Ramón.
Vertical condylar asymmetry (VCA) is considered a risk factor for the development of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). VCA is determined by comparing the vertical condylar height between the left and right condyle. Several techniques have been developed to evaluate this asymmetry, and the most common among them are developed by Kjellberg et al. (1994) and Habets et al. (1988). The objective of this study was to evaluate the similarity of the Habets' and Kjellberg's methods with regard to these results and analyze the VCA results of the temporomandibular joint in patients with signs and symptoms of TMD. We analyzed 48 patients between 12 and 65 years of age. In each patient, the percentage of condylar symmetry according to the Kjellberg's and Habets'...

Psychological stress alters the ultrastructure and increases IL-1β and TNF-α in mandibular condylar cartilage BJMBR
Lv,Xin; Li,Qiang; Wu,Shun; Sun,Jing; Zhang,Min; Chen,Yong-Jin.
Psychological factors can be correlated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), but the mechanisms are unknown. In the present study, we examined the microstructural changes and expression of proinflammatory cytokines in mandibular condylar cartilage of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in a psychological stress animal model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (8 weeks old, 210 ± 10 g) were randomly divided into 3 groups: psychological stress (PS, N = 48), foot shock (FS, N = 24), and control (N = 48). After inducing psychological stress using a communication box with the FS rats for 1, 3, or 5 weeks, PS rats were sacrificed and compared to their matched control littermates, which received no stress and were killed at the same times as the PS rats. Body and adrenal...

Reliability of Two Techniques for Measuring Condylar Asymmetry with X-Rays International Journal of Morphology
Fuentes,R; Engelke,W; Bustos,L; Oporto,G; Borie,E; Sandoval,P; Garay,I; Bizama,M; Borquez,P.
Among structural alterations that can be a risk factor for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is condylar asymmetry. In order to measure the condylar asymmetry index in panoramic x-rays quantitatively, two methods have been proposed: those of Habets and Kjellberg. The aim of this study was to determine whether the x-ray method of measuring condylar asymmetries in orthopantomographies presents a minor tendency to error due to slight displacements of the head in the horizontal plane. 30 patients between 18 and 25 years of age were assessed. Each of them underwent three panoramic x-rays in three different positions: orthoradial, and at 5 and 10 horizontal angles. Then the Habets and Kjellberg measurements were taken. Habets' technique did not show any...

Role of Hyaluronic Acid in the Homeostasis and Therapeutics of Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis International Journal of Morphology
Iturriaga,Veronica; Vásquez,Bélgica; Manterola,Carlos; del Sol,Mariano.
The aim of this study was to perform a literature review regarding the role of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the homeostasis and therapeutics of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA). The TMJ has characteristics that give it special adaptation and recovery abilities, where HA plays a fundamental role in helping to maintain joint homeostasis, which is affected in pathological processes like OA. OA is a chronic degenerative multi-factor disease that can affect all the components of the synovial joints, causing degradation of the articular cartilage, extracellular matrix and breakage in the HA molecules. HA is a non-branched linear polysaccharide with viscosupplementation, anti-inflammatory, lubrication and pain relief effects; it also activates the...

Skin Doses on the Lens for Temporomandibular Joint Exam in Cone Beam Computed Tomography BABT
Oliveira,Marcus Vinicius Linhares de; Andrade,Marcos Ely Almeida; Batista,Wilson Otto; Campos,Paulo Sergio Flores.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the kerma at the surface of the lens in TMJ CBCT and to derive the equivalent dose. An anthropomorphic phantom of the head and neck manufactured by Radiation Support Devices (model RS-230) was used. The dosimetric measurements were obtained by using fourteen thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) dosimeters (LiF: Mg, Ti), divided in two pairs (one pair for each eye) and positioned on the surface of the phantom, per scanner evaluated. The tomographic images were acquired in three types of CBCT equipment (CS 9000, Gendex GXCB 500 and i-CAT). Values of equivalent dose obtained were: 5.82 mSv (CS 9000); 5.38 mSv (Gendex GXCB 500) and 7.98 mSv (i-CAT), which varied in accordance with the scanner and the exposure factors...

Study About the Development of the Temporomandibular Joint in the Human Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly specialized articulation that differs from all the other synovial articulations for many reasons. In children, different from what we observe in adults, these articulations have rarely been studied under the morphofunctional aspect, mainly in the embryonary and fetal stages. In this study 10 fetuses with ages varying from 16 to 39 weeks of intrauterine life were used, and it could be observed that the fibers and thickness of the articular disc, as well as the articular capsule and the condylar process, suffer modifications according to age. It was also observed that the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle inserts itself in the articular disc and capsule in all the ages studied. Also, the maturation of...

Ultrastructural Analysis of Masseter and Left Medial Pterigoid Muscles, After Unilateral Mandibular Molar Extraction: Experimental Study International Journal of Morphology
Benigno,Maria Ivone Mendes; Liberti,Edson Aparecido; Conde Jr,Airton Mendes; de Sousa Leal,Noélia Maria; Lopes Rodrigues,Karla Emanuelle; Mota,Vanessa Benigno; Amstalden,Eliane Maria Ingrid.
Twelve adult male Wistar rats (220 g average weight) were divided in 3 experimental groups: GI -15. GII 30 and GIII 60 days, after mandibular molar extraction, with three experimental animals and one control per group. Qualitatively, ultrastructural changes of protein filaments from myofibrils of these muscles and ipsilateral to the extractions were observed. Ultrastructure asymmetry and disorganization of Z line and I band, in the experimental group GII, of Medial Pterigoid muscle (MPT) were observed. The temporomandibular dysfunction, stimulated by the unilateral extractions of mandibular molars in rats may lead to modifications in the Z line and I band, which showed to be sensitive to this dysfunction. Changes in the MPT muscle, probably related to...
